English shadowing practice with sentence replay

Listen, check the words and repeat aloud at a pace you can manage.

Shadowing means speaking along with a recording, usually just behind the speaker. Listen-and-repeat is different: you pause the recording, then say the sentence. Start with the second approach if keeping up with continuous speech is difficult.

ListenSlice provides sentence playback, a transcript control and dictation in the same workspace. Its guided repetition activity supports listening and saying a sentence aloud; a repetition count is not a pronunciation grade. You can also choose your own sequence in Free Practice.

How it works

01Choose a clear voice

Select a library recording or your own permitted file. Begin with one short sentence you can understand.

02Listen and repeat

Check the transcript, replay the sentence and say it aloud. Try speaking along only when you can follow comfortably.

03Check understanding

Listen to the surrounding passage without speaking. Explain the meaning, then choose the next sentence or stop.

How to practise English shadowing

Choose a clear sentence whose meaning you understand. Listen once, reveal the text if needed and notice stressed words and pauses. Repeat after the recording first. When comfortable, play it again and speak just behind the voice, then listen to the surrounding passage without speaking.

Shadowing for beginners: make the passage manageable

Use a short phrase rather than racing through a long sentence. Keep the transcript visible for support and stop to check unfamiliar wording. The library includes slower VOA recordings as well as natural-speed material. Playback speed adjustment is a Pro feature; short passages and replay are another way to manage the task.

When dictation is more useful than another repetition

If you can copy the rhythm but do not know which words you heard, type the sentence and check the transcript. Review the uncertain phrase before repeating it. If the wording is already clear, you can move on without writing every sentence.

A small session with a clear stopping point

As a starting routine, choose three sentences from one recording, review the words, repeat each while it remains useful, then replay the short passage in context. There is no required number of repetitions. Next time, try a new sentence as well as a familiar one so memorisation is not your only progress check.

Frequently asked questions

Does ListenSlice score my pronunciation?

No. The repetition counter records your action, not the quality of your spoken English. Dictation accuracy compares typed words with a transcript and is not a speaking score.

Do I have to complete a guided lesson to shadow?

No. Free Practice lets you replay a sentence, reveal the transcript and repeat aloud without completing a fixed sequence first.

Can I use speeches or podcasts for shadowing?

Yes, with a supported audio file you are permitted to use. Choose a clear short passage and check the generated transcript. ListenSlice does not import arbitrary streaming URLs.

What can I try for free?

Start with the library or the on-page demo. The Free plan includes 3 own audio files per month, up to 15 minutes each, and 3 AI tutor questions per day. Some features require an account. See Pricing for current paid plans and allowances.
